A portrait of the artist as a young man
Jack King was born in rural Cumbria in December 1988, where he lived until he was 17. He was a practical chap, and his interest in how things work led him to study engineering. In 2010 he graduated from Selwyn College, Cambridge with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. After graduating, he took a sabbatical, spending time in Cumbria, China and Belgium, working on a variety of projects. In the autumn of 2011 he began to study for a PhD in the School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh, which he completed in December 2014.

Throughout his life, Jack has been a keen participant in a variety of sports, competing in tennis, badminton, lacrosse, athletics, and cycling. He sometimes goes fishing, although entirely non-competitively: just for fun.
